Teach your KIDS BASIC COOKING TECHNIQUES…

Teach your kids basic cooking techniques. There is no better way to say goodbye to the “picky” part of picky eater than giving children a little input into the world of food and cooking. That’s not to say they should call all the shots in the kitchen. Maybe one night a week, they can call most of the shots and have a real sense of ownership for the menu choice and preparation of ingredients.

Try sitting down at the table and picking out a simple, never-fail type of recipe together. Either an old favorite, or an interesting new one. One basic cooking technique is making a shopping list. Have the
young ones check for the needed ingredients for the recipe in the pantry and refrigerator, etc. Have them list the needed recipe items that are to be purchased or write it for them if they are too young to spell the ingredients.

Next, take everyone involved on a shopping expedition. Maybe, just this time, it could be a special trip aside from the regular grocery shopping. Shop only for your recipe ingredients so that your kids will know the cost of the dish they have chosen to create.  Searching out the needed ingredients is a large part of teaching your kids basic cooking techniques.

Then, of course, it’s time to cook. Gather everyone in the kitchen and go to work preparing the ingredients and assembling the dish.
Very young children can also help. They can mix and stir. They can crumble, tear and break things into smaller pieces. So before your kids are ready for knife skills, they can use their little hands to help. Older children can start learning knife skills. The choice to let your child begin using a knife is as always, up to you good parents who know the maturity of your own kids.

Teaching your kids basic cooking techniques can keep them fit and healthy. It can be a family project to see who comes up with the best healthy ingredient ideas for mealtime menus.
Soon, a bit at a time, your picky eater, or non-veggie eater will be involved and trying out one or two new food items. Your family will benefit all around when you teach basic cooking skills and techniques to your kids.
